A tool has been created called the document viewer which allows users to search for letters tagged with a specific theme. Up to two letters can be viewed at a time, side-by-side. To assist users with searches, a master list of themes is available for download, describing each theme in various categories (e.g., agriculture, plantation life, plantation operations, transportation, etc.). We recommend users download this list of themes before beginning their search.
INSTRUCTIONS for use: A screen shot of the document viewer is shown below. To begin using the tool, users select a theme from the drop-down list in the middle column, then click the magnifying glass icon to retrieve all letters associated with that theme. A Boolean option is provided to search for letters with up to two themes (use "AND" for a specific search that includes BOTH of your selected themes; use "OR" for a general search that contains EITHER of your selected themes). Retrieved letters can be ordered/sorted chronologically by date or alphabetically by author or location. By clicking to the left or right of any retrieved letter, the user may select up to two letters at a time to view/compare side-by-side in the left and right viewing panes. Using the tabs below each letter, the user may switch between original and transcribed views of a selected letter, and also click the diskette icon to save a copy of any letter to their computer. Detailed tag information for each letter displays below the tabs, including embed source code if teachers or students wish to grab and place a copy of a specific letter on their own blog or Web page. We recommend using the document viewer in full-screen mode to enhance readability.
